On August 11th 2008, the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games announced that Hadleigh Farm situated in Hadleigh Essex would be the location for the men’s and women’s Mountain Biking events at the London 2012 Olympics. Hadleigh Farm is owned by the Salvation Army and also the venue covers a 550 acre site which includes stunning woodland. It also entails surrounding countryside of Hadleigh Country Park. The site provides a technically challenging course with vast inclines for mountain biking and a climb of 70 metres from top to bottom. Additionally, it allows excellent viewing opportunities for spectators and ticket-holders. The course is set against the surroundings of the historical ruins of Hadleigh Castle, helping to make for an exceptionally picturesque backdrop.

From the build-up to preparing the Olympic site, a unique development control committee approved the planning application for the Olympic mountain biking course. A few of the local residents weren’t particularly partial to the works occurring originally and thus meetings took place to discussion exactly why such changes should be made. The widening of Hadleigh’s Chapel Lane was particularly worthwhile because of the possible demand for Emergency access during the Games. Furthermore, Castle Lane has had alterations made caused by a new path being built to accommodate the Salvation Army Tea Rooms. With tight deadlines to be met, the Olympic mountain biking track was officially finished in March 2011 and will be tested on Sunday 31st July 2011 once the Hadleigh Farm Mountain Bike International race is going to be held.

The detailed competition schedule for the London 2012 Olympic Games was released on 15th February 2011 and here are the details for the Hadleigh events; The Olympic Mountain Biking women’s event is to be held on Saturday 11th August 2012 between 12.30 and 2.30pm. The men’s event will be held on Sunday 12th August 2012 between 1.30pm and 3.30pm. The Games opening ceremony is to be held on Friday 27th July 2012 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. The closing ceremony is going to be held on Sunday 12th August 2012 from 7.30pm to 10.30pm. Tickets to watch the London 2012 Olympic Mountain Biking event at Hadleigh Farm cost from 25 to 40. Additionally, on the 27th July 2012, there will be special price pay your age tickets readily available for children, age 16 and under and for seniors, age 60 and over.

While in the Olympic Games spectators can watch the action alongside a winding course spanning through the surrounding woods and parkland. After the Olympics are complete, the temporary structures will be removed, however there has been talk that a course will remain for use of the public. The Olympics will probably increase tourism and also the Hadleigh Business Industry while the Mountain Biking events are going on, but will hopefully also enhance its popularity as the famous site in which the 2012 Olympics were held. Hadleigh currently is a fairly small, quiet town, but during the Olympics and the months prior to it, there’ll be a keen buzz filling the streets as well as the local surrounding areas, including Leigh-on-Sea and Southend-on-Sea. 2012 will be a fantastic year for Hadleigh!

Every day ownership of electric bicycles is increasing . Which is understandable when you consider the benefits over other types of vehicles. So, just what is an electric bicycle? It is a regular bike with one main difference – it is fitted with a powerful electric bike motor which gets its power from a rechargeable battery.

The majority of electric bicycles come in two varieties – throttle activated or pedal activated.

With the pedal activated bicycle the electric bike motor kicks in when you start to pedal. So, not only are these types good for longer distances, but because of the pedaling action, you still get the beneficial exercise too – but without the strain and sweat.

Throttle activated electric bikes offer the same benefits too. But with this type, you activate the motor with a grip on your handlebars, similar to a motorbike.

The other major component of an electric bicycle is the battery. The type of battery to use depends on the kind of terrain you will be traveling and the riders weight.

So, the main advantages of an electric bike are :

Riding one will not make you hot and sweaty

There are no harmful emissions

They do not make any noise

Running costs are very cheap

It only takes about 3 hours to recharge the battery , and at around 5 cents per charge. Recharging can be carried out from any regular household wall electrical outlet.

Electric bicycles are available in a wide range of different styles, sizes and speeds, so you can be sure to find one that suits you perfectly .

An electric bicycle is ideal for commuting short distances every day . Just think, no more traffic jams, no more high fuel costs and insurance, and no more hunting around for a parking space when you arrive at your destination. And an electric bicycle is ideal when you need to pop to the store for one or two items.

Maybe you are thinking how fast can these bikes go? Well, they can reach a top speed of around 30mph, which is a lot faster than you can go in a car on a traffic congested road. And unlike a car, the cost of maintenance is practically zero .

If you have an interest in electric bicycles, you do not have to splash out lots of cash to try one. If you already have a bike, you can simply upgrade it by fitting one of the easily obtained electric bike conversion kits. These come in various flavors for all types of regular bikes.

Once you have experienced an electric bicycle you will never go back to a plain old regular bike ever again – the experience will spoil you for life.

Its a long time since bike wheels were taken from horse-drawn carts! Wooden wheels with a metal band round the bicycle rim were very hard and uncomfortable to ride. Cycling became much more fun when the pneumatic tire was invented and tarred roads came along. And after the first wooden rims then came steel, alloy and now if you can afford it, carbon. These days you can take into account a number of different things including the material used, the shapes/cross-section and the hub construction ( spoked or solid ).

Out of all the bicycle parts the wheel rim can make a big difference to how your bike handles . If you’re into bike workouts where you’re moving fast, this can be important, and if you’re a sprinter or climber then you need light wheel rims so that you don’t get slowed down. With road biking, where the surfaces are flat and even, it’s easier to get the wheels rolling and then the weight gives you good momentum to keep moving .

Flat rims are best for climbing, as aerodynamics are not so important on a hill, while a deep section, aerodynamic wheel rim will help you cut through the air if you’re moving fast ( you can get some handling problems with these in strong cross-winds though ). So the shape of the rim can be important too.

Take into account the material used to make the bike rim too, as although steel has been used the most in the past , and is cheaper, it’s heavy and can be hard to repair if it gets damaged.

Alloy is likely the most popular now-days. It can be made into any shape and profile, flat or aero, but not too deep as it would then weigh too much. Most deep section rims have an alloy braking section nearest the tire which is then mounted into a deep carbon section, which keeps it light and can be moulded to be more aerodynamic .

The best wheel rim would have to be an all-carbon one. Carbon is strong and very light, but there are also a few problems with these rims. They don’t brake so well in wet conditions so you need special brake blocks for carbon which are quite expensive. Also the rim has to be perfectly round and not have any bulges in the rim wall or the braking can become erratic. Carbon is a difficult material to work with and must be well looked after.

The type of tire you intend using also influences what rim you go after. There are two types:

Tubular tires are glued onto the bicycle rim. These are more modern and cost more ( also being more difficult to repair ) but for racing they feel and ride wonderfully.

Clincher tires fit into the rim. They’ve improved a lot recently and are nearly as good as tubulars for performance and are easily repairable and cost far less.

So there’s a lot to decide on, but one good thing these days is that wheel are are manufactured in all these variations and in sets – Mavic, Shimano and Campagnolo are probably the best known, and there are other brands as well. The manufacturers make up the wheels as complete units so that you can buy them already set-up for the type of riding you’ll be doing .

Mtn biking is a very well-liked extreme sports activity throughout much of the world. It is classed as an extreme sports activity due to the fact it can be particularly hard an oftentimes incredibly dangerous, and it places a tremendous amont of physical exertion on it’s participants. Mtn biking is the art of using a specifically modified bicycle, throughout very rough terrain, commonly in the mtns or anywhere, as long as it is off-road. Many Mountain biker clubs arrange competitions and shows for the greatest mtn biker, to strut their stuff.

There are three primary types of mountain biking categories, which are downhill, cross country and freestyle. The free style is exactly what the title suggests, its mountain bikers performing their own aerial displays and jumps on specially made ramps. Freestyle is also used in the city as it is fast becoming the new skate board type craze. Cross country is when an individual, or a group of mountain bikers, take a cross country trek. This can involve one or two nights camping out to boost the experience. Downhill is mostly for competitions and entails speeding down mountain tops and tracks performing tricks or simply velocity racing.

The off road bikes on their own are awesome, they have independent forked suspension and most of them possess disc brakes, it is very vital to be capable to slow or stop really quickly. The body of the bicycle is very sturdy and extremely light, with the tires being broader and thicker than an normal bike. The gears on a mountain bicycle are commonly lower to permit for the uphill struggles the rider can face. Mountain biking is even spawning it’s own type of sports wear, with exclusive helmets and gloves on the market already, and more in the pipeline. Mountain biking is an exhilarating hobby, and it can undoubtedly boost ones wellness and fitness.

It can happen that you have a break from riding. Maybe the weather conditions aren’t right, or you’re recovering from a sprain. But even if you don’t have a break it’s still important to check your bike occasionally and tune it up, so that nothing important breaks or fails on you when you’re speeding down the road.

A good firts thing to check is the chain. Over time, the chain links get worn, the effective length increases, and as this happens, the chain doesn’t line up to the cog and teeth of the chain ring. If you haven’t got a newchain in a year or more, it’s probably time to do it. Replace it before it stretches too much, you’ll save yourself the cost of replacing high priced cogs and chain rings.

You should check the bearing surfaces, that include the bottom bracket, headset and hubs. They should each turn freely without a problem and with no play in the system. Before checking the bottom bracket, make sure each cranking arm is snugged tight. Then hold onto the crank arm (not the pedal) and wobble it back and forth. Any clicking noise, or if the crank arm binds, indicates that the bottom bracket should be adjusted .

Wheel hubs should be done the same way by taking the wheels off the bike, spinning the hub axles and feeling for any free play or binding. If you get this, then you need to make an adjustment.

To check the headset ( where the forks turn ) start by putting the newly adjusted wheels back on the bike. Then pull and push the handle bars back and forth, and there shouldn’t be any play. when you lift the front of the bike off the ground, the fork needs to turn really smoothly, and if not the headset needs to be replaced or fixed.

Brake cables and plastic housings should be checked at the same time. You don’t want any cracks in the housing or rust cables and if that’s the case you need fix it, or your shifting and braking will be sluggish.

Brake pads. Most pads have ridges or indicator marks that show you when they need to be replaced. Brake pads that are worn out are a danger, because you can’t stop properly !

Once you’ve got the tune ups out of the way, it’s time for a bike workout, so have some fun!

There’s no question that developing stronger muscles significantly influences performance in any sport. This should always be accompanied by good nutrition to aid proper muscle development and prevent strain on the body.

Specific tests for cyclist performance quite often get carried out, and there are a lot of bike workouts and programs around. Here’s a brief summation of some tests that have been done and what was found out .

At the University of Maryland, Ben Hurley ran a trial with ten men. All were in good health, but not serious athletes . After 12 weeks they had improved their endurance while cycling by 75%. V02max ( the maximum capacity of an individual’s body to transport and utilize oxygen ) improved by 33% and lactate threshold ( the exercise intensity at which lactic acid starts to accumulate in the blood stream ) lifted by 12%.

This is what was in the training: bench presses, hip flexions, knee extensions, knee flexions, press-ups, leg presses, lat pulldowns, arm curls, parallel squats, and bent-knee sit-ups.

A study of eight experienced cyclists was conducted by R. C. Hickson at the University of Illinois in Chicago . He added 3 days of strength training per week to their regular endurance routines for ten weeks. This had a significant impact on their cycling performance improving their short-term endurance ( ability to continue working at a very high intensity ) by about 11% and increasing the amount of time that they could pedal at an intensity of 80% V02max from 71 to 85 minutes, which was a 20% improvement.

The training was:

parallel squats (five sets of five reps per workout),

knee extensions (three sets of five reps),

knee flexions (3 x 5),

and toe raises (3 x 25),

Resistance was increased steadily as strength improved.

However a test conducted with endurance cyclists , although there was a good gain of strength, tests of a 40 Km race showed that they slowed down. The cyclists said that they felt “heavy” and tired during their workouts.

This test was carried out by James Home at the University of Cape Town with seven endurance cyclists . They each cycled on average about 200 kilometers per week and had three strength training sessions per week incorporated into their routine. The training was three sets of up to eight repetitions of hamstring curls, leg presses, and quadriceps extensions using fairly heavy resistance.

My impression from these three trials is that you can easily see the difference between aerobic and anaerobic performance. I’ve read of this distinction in other sports as well. Particularly with running, you observe that sprinters have much larger more powerful muscles than the long distance runners . The training is based on and tailor-made to the duration of the run. If you are looking at improving your own cycling performance, you can check here for more info on bike workouts.

Mountain bike forks are labeled in keeping with the expertise incorporated in them. Some bike forks include 4X and Jump suspension forks, Freeride / Mountain suspension forks, Every form of suspension fork has its personal advantages and downsides, and is developed for specific surfaces and uses. Important aspects of suspension forks include journey, which is the measurement for the movement of a suspension coil from action to rest.

Leap and 4X forks are sometimes have short travel, coil-sprung forks. The coils move from 80 to a hundred millimeters usually and are made to cushion heavy landings without too much front-finish compression, enabling the rider to immediately get better and continue riding. These are stable forks whose weights are immediately in proportion to their durability. These suspension forks are probably the most sturdy.

Freeride Lite or rigid forks journey more than cross-country forks, with movement as much as round 6 inches at maximum. These forks are expectedly heavier than other fork varieties, rendering lockout even more important. With these forks, most riders are likely to go along with coil-sprung forks vs air-sprung ones. The coils do make the forks heavier, but much less at the mercy of damage once the subject of powerful impacts.

XC cross-country forks sometimes have low levels of journey, and are built for mild weight. These single-crown suspension forks have, on the common, from eighty to at least one hundred millimeters of travel. Forks built for cross-country bikes now increasingly utilise air springs, wherein air stress takes the place of elastometers or springs. Since these already mentioned elements are not present or wanted, the bike’s general weight is lighter. All these suspension forks are also easier to adjust. Nonetheless some riders and producers nonetheless use elastometers and coil-sprung forks as these need less upkeep and take more punishment than XC cross-country forks.

Cannondale Lefty’s and Headshocks have more modern suspension fork technology, which integrates all mechanisms contained in the frame of the bike. The fork is quite reliable, with some high-finish variants coming with lockouts for simple adjustment. These forks sometimes lead to more responsive handling, with active suspension and higher traction.

One of the growing tendencies in cycling is the power to create your individual bike, built to your personal specifications. You can do this by going to a specialist bike builder but that may get very expensive. One of the methods lots of people end up with a custom constructed bike is through the gradual customisation of their present bike.

One of many first things that tends to be modified is the handlebar and this may very well be for a few reasons. Firstly, as a result of the using stance is not quite right for the rider, maybe they have to have an excessive amount of of their physique weight over the handlebars making them really feel unstable or perhaps the handlebars feel too distant to control the bike properly. The opposite cause is basically to reinforce the looks of your bike and to perhaps make it stand out just a little from everybody else. New handlebars are one of the best changes to make which is able to address all of the above.

There are a lot of various kinds of road handlebar designs available as after-market products that will help you resolve a problem with your using position or simply to reinforce the looks of your bike. Drop handlebars are the type of handlebar you historically see on highway bikes or monitor cycles. They’ve a brief straight tube which then bends away from the rider and drops right into a deep C shape. This allows the rider to undertake various driving positions. A casual journey may imply a extra upright place with the hands resting on prime of the handlebars. A racing position will greater than doubtless require the rider to drop his physique forwards together with his arms on the underside a part of the C.

Pursuit handlebars, which are also generally known as bull horn handlebars because of their appearance. Their use comes from dedicated track racing where the place is right for pursuit riding. A technique during which you would make your individual bullhorn handlebars if in case you have a highway bike is to chop the drop off your drop handlebars and remount them upside down. This may not be an ideal solution but it surely offers you an identical riding position.

There are numerous other variations of the above which have been developed for various functions and specialisms and it is all the time price having a superb look around at what’a obtainable as there may be certain to be one thing that will give you the effect you’re looking for.

Since its creation in early 1970s, BMX riding has progressed into a number of different methods mainly due to the “freestyling” skills of its pioneers. This area of steady development has endeared the sport to many. But just like any creative sport having its own sanctioning body, such as slam dunk, figure skating, driving or gymnastics competitions, categories must be set and guidelines applied whilst creativity is still inspired and perfect setup targeted.
Thus, freestyle BMX or stunt riding now features 5 disciplines: street, park, vert, trails/dirt jump and flatland.

Flatland BMX is usually a riding style performed on smooth flat floors sans the ramps, jumps or grind rails. A nice phrase to put it will be “a form of artistic cycling using a mixture of breakdancing and encompassing certain areas of fighting styles and Zen meditation as a discipline.”

Most flatlanders would tend to be very dedicated to mastering their flatland procedures, not like the riders of other disciplines who are able to switch from street to part to dirt jump and vert at any given time. One of the main causes of this is actually the decreased stability of handling smaller bikes on ramps, dirt and street; yet the shorter wheelbase makes it much simpler for them to spin or stand the bike on one wheel.

Their tricks are carried out by balancing and spinning around the bike in a variety of unexpected positions, working with four of either knurled/grip taped aluminium or plastic pegs—one on the end of each and every wheel hub or axle—to stand on and control it to even more innovative acts.

Depending on their style and inclination, flatlanders would also opt for a front brake, a dual front brake with two levers then one brake cable, front and rear brakes, or no brakes at all. The flatland bike would also have specialized frames with geometry suitable for the users’ needs, when it comes to head tube angle, top tube length, and all that jazz.
